I like your video and I'm going to comment. It's a bit a click bait take; Goretex is not a scam, it works, but there are use case limitations, if in a place with generally low humidity rains and after it passes is an ideal case. Also harping on the forever chemicals now when Goretex was developed so far back that their patent is expired is a little revisionist - but that's just my general gripe. Great video. Keep up the good work.

Take a video about this , The world is now ruled by one community of people, the world Satanic elite, you can also call them the committee to meet the Antichrist and prevent the 2nd coming of Jesus, Trump called them the deep state, at the moment it consists of about 10,000 people, the main ones there are Rockefellers, Rothschilds, Windsors, Baruchs, they, their ancestors, descendants and other people who enter there have the mark of Lucifer, which, if they bring the antichrist and do not allow the 2nd coming, they will receive eternal life after the x hour, and the rest of humanity, for all the time that they have lived, they won't get anything, so all people should know about the existence of a world government (Jesus who was a The Prophet of God, not God.God will send Jesus as a reward to humanity, if humanity deserves it, for this it is necessary to fight Lucifer and his elite)

Interesting that you spend the entire video ONLY debunking breathability, then cap off the video saying Goretex isn't waterproof. Those are two different things, and I hate to tell you, but to this day, there's only one fabric I know that can beat Goretex at keeping out the rain. 28,000 mm will keep you dry if a hose is turned on you. There is no such Don't confuse the two. Goretex is hands down still the champ at rain out unless you want to spend twice as much, and NOTHING is more breathable without sacrificing water resistance.

Ok, great. Except it takes 30 minutes and about $2 worth of liquid DWR to completely refresh a jacket, and it will be good all season long. Don't sell your Goretex folks, just refresh the DWR finish and it will be just like new.

So glad you put out this video. One of my biggest disappointments in the outdoor industry is “D”WR, which is never durable and is only water resistant for a short rainstorm. Water vapor cannot transport through a layer of water!! Once the face fabric wets out, due to poor DWR, as you said the fabric is not “breathable” (no water vapor transmission). I did buy a Columbia OutDry jacket once, but hated it. With the “face” fabric on the inside, that is what absorbed all my sweat moisture and felt like I had a wet canvas jacket on. It was the most uncomfortable rain jacket I’ve used in decades. The only solution currently is good ventilation. Fabrics with a high MVTR are helpful for after it stops raining, once the face fabric dries they let your sweat-soaked clothes dry better. But that’s only applicable if it’s cold enough you need to keep wearing the rain jacket when it stops raining!

Here in the PNW I have moved to just using loose fitting impervious shells that maximize airflow or just wool when sweating can't be avoided. Also, ponchos and even umbrellas do a great job keeping you dry when hiking in the rain.

A great option, if you can still find it, is to wear a layer of chlorofibre against your skin. This magic fabric wicks moisture away from your skin extremely efficiently, leaving you feeling dry, even though the moisture is still present and possibly even frozen on the outer layer of your thermals. Chlorofibre was used by Peter Storm and some other manufacturers decades ago. Not sure if you can still get it.

The author of this video shared in another of his videos that he doesn't use a footprint for his tent. Some people claim a footprint, if properly sized and installed under a tent, will prevent ground water from entering the thin tent floor. Maybe they've got it down to an exact science but I find situations like the long, heavy rain in this video make life rather unscientific and more prone to the unexpected. So, I, myself, came to use a regular, old tarp on TOP of the tent floor, on the inside, and cut to size so that it not only matches the shape of the floor but also rises up the walls of the tent approx. 1 - 2 inches (2.5 - 5cm) all the way around. This floor-on-top-floor method has kept everything I store on the floor inside the tent dry, such as my pack, because the regular, old tarp that's been cut to size is 100% waterproof, protecting me and my gear from any moisture coming up through the thin floor of the tent itself. I realize this method wouldn't work when it's raining so hard that water drips down from the inner mesh insect-proof lining of the tent, as shown in this video, but generally speaking I have been sold on putting a cut-to-size tarp on top of my tent floor👍

Waterproof-breathable membranes work best for me in winter, when the air is usually very dry. Even when it’s snowing it’s not as humid as summertime. But I have to be doing some pretty low-exertion stuff because I’m truly a furnace. For me, footwear is where Gore-Tex really shines. Keen.Dry and Oboz BDry don’t breathe as well as GTX or Vasque’s UltraDry.

I'd be very interested for you to try a UK brand called Paramo. They have a very good attitude towards the environment, a bit like patagonia and their workers receive fair pay for work they do. They are unique (as far as I'm aware) as their jackets work differently to most other jackets. I would say they are like a lighter version of a pile lined jacket. They don't claim to be 100% waterproof but they are extremely breathable and they actually wick away moisture from your body effectively. Think of it as a very light dry robe but in jacket form. Would be very interested to see your opinion on one of their adventure smock or any of their waterproof jackets really. Great video!

I'm old enough to remember the pre GoreTex days - at least pre GoreTex where I lived. What I had before where cotton and polyester-cotton blends (like the G1000 used by Fjellraven) treated for waterproofness. These kind of worked - actually really well in misty conditions or with snow well below freezing - but just didn't work well in heavy prolonged rain. I remember biking to school a couple of times in a cotton "waterproof" outdoorsy and almost new jacket and it worked for the 15-20 minutes ride, but after an hour in steady rain it just wet thru. So going hiking with these types of clothes I'd bring a lightweight really waterproof jacket in addition. The other option was to leave the cotton jacket at home and bring only a more heavy-duty rain jacket that certainly would keep the rain out but was unnecessary uncomfortable if the rain let up. Then GoreTex came along, and I bought one of the first jackets available where I lived. And it worked! Not like some miracle fabric that solved every problem, but it was lighter than my cotton jacket and much lighter than an outdoorsy jacket plus a rain jacket. It also kept me at least as dry in rain but was less comfortable than poly-cotton and cotton in warm weather when it didn't rain (no test equipment, but lots of experience and curiosity). I even did a (fairly unscientific but what I could manage) test cross country skiing in around -15C. Same loop of 5 miles three times with polyester-cotton blend, cotton and GoreTex and to my surprise there where clearly less condensation on the inside of the GoreTex jacket. I don't disagree with your findings at all - it's fairly basic knowledge that with close to 100% humidity outside a fabric wont "breathe" much (good illustration with the parking lot BTW, hadn't seen that before). The question is however, what did GoreTex replace and what are the options now? Other waterproof-breathable materials struggle with exactly the same limitations when it comes to high humidity outside the jacket. I've tried Entrant, Triple Point, many versions of GoreTex, eVent, Dermizax and a couple of other with unspecified waterproof breathable technologies and in heavy rain they always struggle and I'll get condensation. But they also replace two other jackets that weigh more and I have to switch between when it's not steady all da rain. I live in an area with fairly unstable weather but even here it's much more common with a mix of showers, light rain/mist, sunny, windy etc. than all day heavy rain and waterproof-breathable tech keep me fairly comfortable in all the conditions. I haven't found anything that works better, maybe except for an umbrella but umbrellas have some serious problems with wind and overgrown trails.

Life long golfer here, my umbrella is huge. Much prefer it to rain gear. Modern umbrellas are designed to not invert even in strong wind. Watch a PGA tour event on a rainy day, every one out there has one. Perhaps for hiking the umbrella/kilt combo would be best. Then there's just wearing the quickest drying clothes you can & don't "sweat" getting wet.

There are many uses for a shell even when it is not raining. And during those times the membrane does let out moisture. Just because it doesn't work in 100% of circumstances doesn't mean it is completely useless. Otherwise I would just wear a plastic bag on dry days to keep the wind off.

I've never really viewed this as a scam. It makes sense that true "breathable" waterproofness doesn't really exist. This video does a good job at illustrating it. But, I've always viewed it as being more breathable than, say, a plastic rain coat. Something I can wear without having to swap it out once the rainy conditions stop. This is something that is especially important when weight matters, such as hiking, or when you are working and you can only really have one set of footwear, for example. My feet still get hot and sweaty in "waterproof" boots and don't breathe anywhere near as well as a pair of tennis shoes, but when it does start raining, I know my feet will be much more dry in the "waterproof" boots than the tennis shoes as well as being much more comfortable in the dry than a dedicated set of rain boots. It is basically the best (or worst, depending how you want to view it) of both worlds. It is nothing more than a balance.
